Curiosity Unleashed!

What is Sumo?

1

You stand in a 15 foot circle and try to shove your friends out of it.

Or you can throw them on the ground.

Or you can shove them and then throw them on the ground.

If your opponent goes out of the circle, or touches the ground with anything other than the bottom of their feet , You win! It’s hella fun.

What are practices like?

2

Sumo is a full contact sport and can be hard on the body.

That said, you get to control how hard you want to go and can communicate that with your training partners.

Nobody is gonna truck you day one (unless you want that smoke).

Practice typically involves some light warmups, some technique, flow sparring (50% effort) and then full sparring (trying to chuck your friends out of the circle).

It also involves a healthy dose of banter, trash talking and general shenanigans.

It’s fun. You should try it.

No!  Sumo is for all sizes, shapes and fitness levels.

An average sumo match lasts 5 seconds.  You can do it.

We welcome men, women and kids over the age of 14.

Am I too big/small/out of shape? Can only men and adults do it?

Do I have to wear the diaper thing?

It’s called a mawashi.  And how dare you.

You don’t have to, but a giant part of sumo are techniques that involve grabbing the mawashi belt.

If you’re not comfortable wearing one, no problem.

It’s a private club with most of the practices in my backyard.

If you’re a good person with good vibes, you’re welcome to come train for $5 bucks per session/person during our indoor days. You can purchase Memberships on the website for multiple sessions! Outdoor sessions are free. This is due to us renting a space in Charlottesville called cville brazilian jiu jitsu!

If you’re not, then we don’t need you.  Thunder Lizard Sumo has a strict “no assholes” policy.

What do I wear under my Mawashi?

7

Sumo is already a weird sport.

Showing up and seeing a bunch of stranger’s butts makes it weirder.

As such, at Thunder Lizard Sumo everyone must wear something underneath their mawashi.

That can be compression shorts, tights, or underwear. Any athletic gear that covers your bum is appropriate.
