A Little About Us and About Sumo

Ancient Origins and Imperial Court

  • Shinto Rituals: Sumo began over 1,500 years ago as a performance to entertain and appease Shinto gods, often praying for a good harvest.

  • Imperial Patronage: During the Nara and Heian periods (8th to 12th centuries), wrestling moved to the imperial court, where annual tournaments and formal rules were established.

Samurai Era

  • Practical Combat: When political power shifted to the samurai class, wrestling was adapted into military training and hand-to-hand combat.

  • Warlord Patronage: Powerful leaders and warlords sponsored matches to test the strength of their fighters.

Edo Period and Modernization

  • Public Organizations: Unregulated street fighting was banned in the 17th century, leading to organized charity events at Shinto shrines and the birth of professional sumo.

  • Standardized Rules: The Edo period finalized the modern ring (dohyo), ranking systems, and many sacred rituals seen today.

Tradition to Practice

Thunder Lizard.

Gojira.

Kaiju.

Godzilla.

The Thunder God “Raijin” gave birth to the Raijin Sumo Club. And Raijin Sumo gave birth to the Thunder Lizard.

Thunder Lizard Sumo humbly carries forth the tradition of Raijin Sumo.

A Thunder Lizard is a badass wrecking ball of a creature that fires atomic radiation from its mouth.

Our hope is that your sumo may be equally rad…
